Specialist Services

We have committed to planting at least one tree for each day worked every year. We understand the importance of professional woodland management plans that are thankfully required to obtain permission for felling operations.

Our planting scheme is just part of our initiative to reduce our carbon footprint.

Trees and more

Including individual, multiple and woodland tree planting, hedgerow creation, and evergreen screening.

Our expertise focuses on enhancing landscape health and beauty, emphasising sustainability and biodiversity in urban areas, properties, or open woodland. We prioritise a careful approach to ensure positive contributions to the environment.

Species Selection

Selecting tree species for planting is crucial, requiring consideration of factors like soil conditions, climate, sunlight, and available space. We aim to choose trees that thrive locally, considering growth habits, mature size, and environmental impact.

Our goal is to ensure long-term health, resilience, and aesthetic appeal, fostering a sustainable landscape.

Site Preparation

We evaluate factors like soil quality, drainage, and sunlight before clearing debris and amending soil for optimal root development.

Careful planning ensures proper spacing and layout and sets the foundation for a resilient and thriving tree population, contributing to overall landscape health and sustainability.

Hedges and Hedgerows

Hedge Species and Planting

Factors like function, climate, soil, and space are considered when selecting suitable hedge species based on growth habits and maintenance requirements. Once identified, careful planning involves soil preparation, proper spacing, and irrigation.

This approach ensures a healthy, attractive, and functional hedge, whether for privacy, windbreak, or aesthetics in the landscape.

Agricultural Hedgerows

Optimising hedgerows' ecological and agricultural functions involves planning and maintaining vegetation along field borders to balance biodiversity preservation with practical farming needs.

We maintain hedgerows to encourage diverse plant and animal life and maintain them as corridors for beneficial wildlife.

Funding advice - If you were eligible for the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) in 2022 or 2023, you’ll be able to apply for the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) , which includes hedgerow and buffer strip payments.

Ecology Projects

Environmentally Sensitive Sites

Precise and targeted interventions maintain tree health without disrupting the environment.

We mitigate soil disturbance, protect wildlife habitats, and minimise machinery use while achieving necessary tree care and preserving ecological integrity. Our experience of these complexities ensures we make positive contributions to biodiversity and overall environmental health.

External Ecologists

We have extensive experience in working with ecologists to combine arboriculture and environmental conservation efforts.

We ensure that our work aligns with ecological principles, promoting biodiversity and ecosystem health, incorporating ecological insights to guide tree care activities, and contributing to the preservation of natural landscapes.

Meeting Strict Criteria

Over the past 20 years, our commitment to excellence and ability to work within strict criteria has established us as a trusted provider of exceptional tree care services throughout the South West.

We are the preferred contractor for many private individuals, farms, corporate clients and estates.

Tree and Wildlife Surveys

Assessments include identifying tree species, measuring vitality, and noting signs of diseases or stress. Wildlife surveys document fauna presence and understanding of interdependence.

Collected data informs land management and conservation, ensuring a holistic approach to preserving tree habitats and the broader ecosystem.

Woodland Management

Thinning

Woodland thinning optimises forest health, timber productivity and biodiversity. A win-win for a woodland.

Thinning involves selectively removing trees to achieve balanced density, enhancing sunlight penetration and reducing competition.
This promotes the growth of healthier and more resilient trees, preventing diseases and pests, and is a crucial aspect of sustainable woodland management.

Planting

Woodland planting enhances forest ecosystems, timber supply for future generations and biodiversity. We work with woodland managers to select tree species based on site conditions for a balanced and sustainable woodland.

The process involves strategic spacing and natural regeneration consideration and supports carbon sequestration, soil health, and overall ecosystem vitality.

Coppicing

Woodland coppicing enhances forest health and biodiversity. It involves periodically cutting trees near ground level to stimulate new shoots, creating a multi-stemmed structure. We carefully select tree species suitable for coppicing, determining cutting frequency based on desired outcomes.

Coppicing is crucial for the resilience and long-term sustainability of woodlands.

Felling and Extraction

Woodland felling and extraction are vital for maintaining healthy and sustainable forests. We plan and execute tree felling considering factors like age and species.

Our efficient extraction methods transport harvested timber, using machinery or traditional methods based on site characteristics. Our services ensure the long-term health and productivity of the forest.

Boundary Maintenance

Woodland boundary maintenance is important for defining and safeguarding forested areas. We work with woodland managers to prevent encroachment and ensure clear demarcation. Activities may include pruning, fence repair, or signage installation.

Clear boundaries protect woodland integrity, support conservation, and reduce the risk of dangerous trees or limbs impacting public rights of way.

Bespoke Projects

Bat Roost Carved into a Tree

The client wanted to use a dying tree to create a natural habitat for bats. We first removed the outer limbs, leaving the trunk upright in the ground. We then carved out and removed rectangular sections, taking a thin layer off the back before re-inserting and fixing them in to the trunk. This creates a cavity at the back of the section, a suitable home for the Bechstein's Bat species.

Garden Tree House

The client wanted to use wood and windows from an old house, combined with a fallen larch tree to create a small tree house for their children. We created a three-legged structure with one leg utilising a recently storm-damaged tree.

We used part of the larch trunk as a staircase, cut wooden shingles for the roof and created a timber front door.
